Some personal experiences enjoyable, some not:
The 'enjoyable' experiences occur when the customer level is light. The food is excellent value for the price, the kitchen knows what it's all about from that point of view. The Friday night buffet is one of Antigonish's hidden secrets where Chef Rick shines - within the context of the type of fare one would expect from a 'pub'.
On quiet days, or during the off-peak hours, the regulars at the bar tend to be working-class men who come to relax and wind down after a day's work. Bar staff are capable but vary in attitude and performance.
The less than enjoyable experiences outweigh the enjoyable ones:
(1) Antigonish is a university town. On 'Student Nights' there is a Security contingent that are fair, effective and efficient at their role. However, the washrooms have been seen in a deplorable state with feces, urine seen in the men's washrooms on the floor and what appeared to be ejaculate on the walls of the stalls and feces on the toilet seats - definitely not a place for decent people. Drugs can be seen changing hands. The Health Department appear to keep their distance on these occasions. The RCMP also keep their distance, although are parked outside and are vigilant at these times.
(2) Serving staff vary in effectiveness: there seems to be a pervasive attitude that they are entitled to large tips, are ungrateful for anything else. They haven't learned, and need to learn, that good service requires a third eye on the back of their heads, always scanning the area for patrons who are trying to catch their attention. That is what tips are for - good service. At Piper's it doesn't happen often enough. Servers frequently come over to take orders, deliver food, etc., and then turn their backs and walk away without scanning the other nearby tables for requests or new orders.
(3) The Head Server is officious, domineering, and seems to have a feminist, negative attitude which seems to have been carried over onto the other servers. Decisions are inappropriate and seem designed to coddle the servers, and alienate and inconvenience the paying patrons. It feels oppressive.
(4) While Piper's wants to pass themselves off as a 'Pub', in truth it's a tavern, at times a beer-hall.
There are many other issues this reviewer found with this establishment however there's no point in going further.
